澳大利亚国防部长理查德-马尔斯报告说，澳大利亚发现了蒙得维的亚丸号。
这是一艘日本船，在第二次世界大战期间沉没，船上有864名澳大利亚士兵。这艘船在吕宋岛西北部的中国南海沉没，它结束了澳大利亚历史上的一段悲惨经历。1942年7月，一艘美国潜艇向该船发射了鱼雷，当时该船正从巴布亚新几内亚前往中国的海南。美国人并不知道船上有战俘。
澳大利亚士兵和一群海洋科学家在4000多米深的地方发现了这艘船的残骸。超过1000人，包括战俘和来自不同国家的平民，在这次事件中丧生。
